Thanksgiving Ideas for Couples

Traditionally, Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated as a big family event when all the members get together over large sumptuous dinners, football games and happy family banter. But this does not give you an excuse to forget all about your partner. In fact this is also a day to be grateful for having a wonderful relationship and a special person to share your life with. So go over the following suggestions and make the most of this Thanksgiving with your significant other.

  1. Cook a Thanksgiving dinner with your partner

Rope in your loved one into preparing a Thanksgiving dinner. If he or she likes pottering around the kitchen then you can go the whole hog and assemble a traditional spread including roast turkey and pumpkin pie. On the other hand if your partner’s culinary skills are restricted to boiling an egg, plan something like mashed potatoes and turkey cutlets which will keep things simple and yet let you have a feel of the occasion. The whole idea is to spend time with each other while doing something fun and creative. And if the result is something that will set you free from worrying about what to make for supper tonight, what could be better!

  2. Attend a service

Take your bonding as a couple to a different level by attending a service together. Remember the saying about the family that prays together, stays together. It might be equally true for couples as well. You need not subscribe the same religious views as your partner; just let the service be a way of thanking the powers-that-be for helping you both to find each other in love. You will be surprised how peaceful and fulfilled you feel after praying with your partner.

  3. Watch the parade together

Go out to watch the Thanksgiving Day parade with your partner. The joyful scene with colors flags, lively band, fantastic acrobats and cheering people will surely send your spirits soaring. Hold hands and mingle with neighbors or people you know in the town. After the parade you can proceed to check out the food stalls or have lunch at an outdoor café in the Parisian style. Wrap up the day by stealing a quiet moment to watch the sun go down behind the trees or on the water.

  4. Head for the countryside

Use this Thanksgiving holiday to create some lovely memories with your partner. Pack a picnic hamper and go driving around the countryside. The fresh scenes and smells of nature will not only give you a much-needed break from the dreary sights of the city but will also provide an ideal background to get in tune with your lover’s thoughts and feelings. Use the day to come close to each other before you head back to tack Thanksgiving dinner at your family’s.

  5. Catch a game together

This is yet another Thanksgiving tradition that can be modified to suit a couple.  Attend a football game with your partner if you are a sports fan. You could also invite common friends over to your house and watch the game on the TV. Either way make sure you have lots of fun cheering loudly for your favorite team and chomping down buckets of popcorn.

  6. Team up to volunteer

Why not do something different this Thanksgiving Day? Team up with your partner to volunteer at a soup kitchen or an abandoned women’s shelter. Look up the Yellow Pages or call up your city office to learn who needs help, where and how. Spending Thanksgiving with people who are less fortunate that you will help you to forget about your own troubles and be grateful for all that you have.

  7. Surprise your partner with a special dinner

If you have been cooking a Thanksgiving dinner for your family or attending one with your relatives for the last few years, why not make something special for your partner this year? Invite your partner over on Thanksgiving night and surprise him/her with a special dinner that you have cooked. It need not be as elaborate as traditional thanksgiving spreads but make sure you include dishes that your partner loves. For instance if she is not very keen on turkey, make roast ham. Or keep turkey cutlets on the side and let the main course be chicken. Again if pumpkin pie seems to much a hassle for you, go for your partner’s favorite ice-cream but decorate it with Thanksgiving symbols like cranberries or chocolate beans. Also, make sure that you have some nice wine ready to start the evening with. Finally don’t forget to put on some light romantic music and aromatic candles to set the atmosphere.

  8. Accompany your partner to his/her family dinner

If you have been in a relationship for some time and are comfortable with your partner’s family, why not accept their invitation for Thanksgiving dinner? It will give you a chance to get to learn about many wonderful hitherto-unknown things about the man or woman you love. At the same time the occasion will offer you a useful peek into your partner’s family circle should you be thinking of ultimately marrying the person. And who knows, you might end up having a roaring time at your partner’s family Thanksgiving dinner.

  9. Attend a theme party

Even though Thanksgiving is essentially a home affair, there are many restaurants, clubs and resorts which organize themed-based Thanksgiving parties. While one may offer a traditional dinner with the necessary trimmings, another may tempt you with a Greek-themed menu including favorites like Tzatziki, Stuffed Turkey Greek style, Greek Green Bean Casserole and sugared almond cookies or Kourabiethes.

  10. Get cozy before the fireplace

After the happy hustle and bustle of a Thanksgiving dinner, unwind before the fireplace with your partner. Watch the fire crackling with steaming cups of hot cocoa in your hands and swap thanksgiving stories spent with families. Finally, say a silent prayer of thanks for being together with the person you love.

So even if Thanksgiving Day is essentially a family affair, couples can use this occasion to have an enjoyable time with each other. All you need is a bit of imagination and loads of love to turn the day into a memorable one for you both.
