At the same time, giving a ring need not be the sole preserve of about-to-be engaged couples and can simply mean that you wish to present your partner with something special. What is important is that both people are on the same page as to implications of such a gift, so that that are no misunderstandings. So whether you are looking for a special gift for your partner or wish to take the relationship further, here are some romantic ways to give a ring which are sure to charm him/her.

Recreate your first date

If your partner often gets nostalgic about the first time you went out with each other, why not recreate the magic for this truly special moment. Go back to the restaurant where you had taken your beloved and request for the very same song that had been playing that day. Also wear the same suit or dress – if it still fits you – and do something silly that you had done that day and which your partner still remembers. And while he/she is having a good time reminiscing about your first date and laughing at how nervous you had looked, signal to the waiter to bring the same order but with the ring hidden beneath the food cover or placed in the champagne flute. Just be sure to give it to your partner before he/she gulps down food or drink and the ring with it.

A chocolaty surprise

for a safer idea, here is a delicious way to present a ring to your partner, especially if she loves chocolates, as most women do. Buy a box of gourmet chocolates, preferably heart-shaped, from one of the best confectioners in your town. Remove one of the chocolates from the box and replace it with the ring. Don’t forget to have the box wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with a fancy bow. When your girlfriend opens the box expecting only chocolates, she will see the ring and most probably dissolve in happy tears.

Add on to it

If you wish to upgrade your partner’s former ring -- or add on to it -- it is important to choose something that the she will wear with pride. Whether it is a circular princess-cut diamond, an emerald-cut rectangular diamond, or a precious pearl, everyone has their own preferences. Again if you are thinking of replacing your husband’s wedding ring, he may prefer a simple, fuss-free gold band but more superior in quality. Choose something personal that will cater to your beloved’s tastes but which would also serve the purpose he/she has in mind and your gift will surely be a hit.

A pearl on the beach

If you are lucky to live in a town with a beach, go shell-collecting with your girlfriend on a pleasant day. However before that buy a small jewelry box or an aquarium accessory in the shape of an oyster shell and put the ring in it. While your girlfriend is actually looking for shells on the beach, swiftly plant the box in the sands and let out a whoop of joy as though you have found something unusual. Hand it over to your girlfriend and when she opens the faux oyster shells, she will find a ring nestling in it.

Get sensuous

if you wish to make the ring giving part of a romantic proposal, here is an idea for an intimate evening. When your partner returns home after work, run the bath with warm water with a few  drops aromatic oils. Let her favorite music play softly and light scented candles around the bath. However make sure that the drain is well-plugged. Finally, place  a floating candle with a ring between its petals and wait for her to open it. At first your girlfriend will be merely pleased that you have run a luxurious bath for her, but once she finds the ring, you can be sure she will want you to join as well.

Give it to your man

Giving a ring in a relationship has been conventionally done by men. But the these days with more women taking the initiative in a relationship, there is no reason why you cannot do so for your man, whether just as a gift or even to propose marriage. Here again the purpose of giving the ring should be reflected in the style. For instance if you are looking to add on to your boyfriend’s accessories, wrap it in a little box and leave it on the dresser. Or hand it to him saying something like, “honey, look what i found while i was out the other day. I think it would look so good on you.” On the other hand if it is a promise ring or something to propose marriage with, come up with a romantic idea. Go golfing at sunset and pretend to go looking for the ball or something. Come up with your fist closed and he reaches out to take the ball, give him the ring and say the words of your heart’s desire.

Between the pages

This idea is great if you are looking to give your partner a promise ring which while signaling to your sweetheart that you are serious about the relationship, does not wade into the complexities of a marriage proposal. Buy a book of love poems for your partner, preferably by his/her favorite poet(s). Leave the pages in the first third of the book as they are. Using a utility knife, carve out a small square into the other pages to create a cavity just big enough to place the ring. Present the book to your partner and once you have settled down with a glass of wine, ask him/her to read a few of the poems aloud to you. After flipping through a few pages, he/she will discover the ring – a perfect ode to your love.

Breakfast in bed

If your partner enjoys sleeping in, here is a great way to say “good morning”. Set a breakfast tray for him/her with toast, eggs, juice and a flower for decoration. Keep the ring on a small plate and cover it so it looks like part of the breakfast menu. Your partner will be glad just seeing you bringing breakfast in bed but ecstatic is the word when he/she uncovers the closed plate and finds the ring!
