Get out of doors

Since Memorial Day falls bang in midsummer, it is the best time to go on an outdoor date. You could simply pick up your bikes and hit the mountain trail or even go sailing on the calm blue waters. However for those couples who would like to take it easy, a picnic in the park would make an equally great idea. Just keep to a few rules, though. No cell phone, Blackberry, iPod or laptop that brings interference from the outside world. Let this be an occasion to connect with your partner in the midst of the myriad sounds and hues of Nature. Breathe in the fresh air, delight in the sparkling sunlight and once at the end of the day, walk by a cemetery that honors the brave servicemen and women of the country. However if you are the daring sort, you could even build a bonfire on the beach at night. In most places it may not be allowed, but the thrill of doing something fiery and forbidden is so worth it.

Give in to a spirit of adventure

If you are looking at a summer of hectic schedule at work, make sure you spend the long Memorial Day weekend doing something spectacular with your partner. For instance go white-water rafting, or canoe down a river. It will not only be a thrilling experience in itself, but is sure to strengthen the bond between you and your partner since you will be facing dangers together, as a team. And once you have emerged from the water and dried yourselves, you can always continue the adventure indoors!

Learn something new

Since Memorial Day involves three days of leisure in a row, it is perfect time to learn something new with your partner. Just do a Google or a Bing search of your neighborhood or town plus couples’ classes and you will get information on a host of options. You could choose to learn bartending, wine appreciation or cooking an exotic cuisine if you both love the epicurean life. On the other hand, if you and your partner are into holistic living, try out Yoga, aromatherapy or organic gardening classes. Sharing a creative hobby not only gives you something enjoyable to do together but also lets you unfurl your imaginative powers. And everyone knows how a vivid imagination comes in extremely handy in the bedroom.

Catch a game

If you and your partner are sports buffs but feel too wound up to do all the running and chasing yourselves, catching a game is the next best thing. It could be baseball, basketball, major, minor or even local league. The whole point is to be in the midst of a great wave of enthusiasm and just go with the flow of energy all around. There will be no awkward pauses in conversation, what will all the action on the field as well as the chilled beer and juicy hotdogs to feast on. Later you could stop at a café where it is quieter and go for a nice hot espresso as well as some pleasant conversation.

Take part in a Memorial Day Event

Even though this is the most obvious thing to do on a Memorial Day, in real life fewer and fewer people remember the reason behind the holiday. So look up your city newspaper or other local listings to see what events are scheduled for the occasion. You and your partner could wander about a street fair, sample the food stalls, watch a concert in the park, cheer a parade and take part in lots of other fun things. This is an ideal way to spend a bright summer day and that too without shelling out a fortune since entry to almost all these venues are free. And if you happen to see a man or woman in uniform, don’t forget to go up to them, shake their hand and say, “thank you”. After sundown you can watch fireworks lighting up the sky and return home with your partner for an intimate evening.

Plan a movie night

If you and your partner wish to remain indoors for some reason, you could still make a date of it. rent out a few DVDs preferably with romantic theme against a war backdrop like Pearl Harbor, Gone With the Wind, Casablanca and so on. don’t forget to keep some popcorn and soda handy and arrange the furniture so that you get the feeling of being at a Cineplex. Also ring up for a pizza or burger to be delivered at your place at a particular time so that after one movie is over, you can take a snack break and discuss what you liked – and didn’t – about the movie.

Take a last minute trip

The long weekend on Memorial Day means that you can manage to get out of town with your partner for a couple of days. And even though you may find flights and hotel heavily booked, you could still search the internet for some last-minute deals. Even if that does not come about, simply throw together a few things in the car and set off for a long drive. Stop at a countryside inn or a bed-and-breakfast at a place you have never visited before. And you just might be surprised by something wonderful that this out-of-the-way town has to offer.
