The nine most romantic places in Mexico for honeymoons

A look at the nine most romantic destinations and vacation spots in Mexico. If you're going to Mexico on a romantic holiday, these are some of the places you could consider going to.

1) Cancun

Cancun is located on the east coast of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo. This island is surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, Laguna Nichupté and Bahía de Mujeres. There are lagoons, sandbars and swamps in abundance, edged with coral reefs. Cancun is a couple of hours away from many United States air-hubs, and an easy connection from most places. It is flooded with students who are on their spring break in the months of February, March and April, making it a particularly busy time if you want some peace and quiet, while November to January can witness winter storms. Cancun offers many water activities like surfing, scuba diving, fishing, kayaking, sailing and even swimming and snorkelling with the dolphins at Xel-ha, a natural aquarium. Alternatively, you could try your hand at golfing at one of the four golf courses. If you want to take in some sightseeing, you could visit the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, an ecological park that has forests, ruins and many species of birds. Or visit the three museums i.e. the Museo de Arqueología de Cancun that shows original artifacts from the pre-Hispanic settlements; the Interactive Aquarium of Cancun, located in "La Isla Shopping Village", that showcases the fish and coral found in the Caribbean and the "Museo de Arte Popular Mexicano" located next to the Cancun Theatre, that displays the diversity of local handicrafts.

You can even learn about its history with the Mayan ruins it offers or simply soak in the sun and laze around on the beach! Cancun’s most famous reef, the Belize Reef has varieties of amazing coral. The Cancun ferry to Isla Mujeres departs from Puerto Juarez, eight times a day, to and fro. Cancun also has a bustling nightlife with discotheques, restaurants, jazz and piano bars.

Xcaret Water Park, 40 miles south, features an underground river 1,700 feet long and the chance to swim with dolphins. Escape to the past with visits to the ruins of Chichen Itza and El Castillo pyramid. The Mexico Magico theme park, filled with shops, theaters and restaurants, adds more choices.

2) Cozumel

Cozumel is situated on the shore of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, on the eastern tip of the Yucatan peninsula, across from Playa del Carmen (another vacation paradise for honeymooners with its lush jungles and water sports) and Cancun to the east. You can either take a direct flight into Cozumel or fly into Cancun and thereafter a commuter flight or ferry from Playa del Carmen. Like Cancun, Cozumel also experiences winter storms from November to January.

A large portion of Cozumel remains untouched by development, with its only town, San Miguel on the western side. It is wonderful to explore lagoons and dense forests, provided you don’t get lost! As in most island resorts, the waterside activities are plentiful, with swimming and windsurfing being very popular. You can also go snorkelling or diving around the Palancar Reef or explore the underwater life via a glass-bottom boat.

The Cozumel Reefs’ National Park has some great dive sites. Among the sightseeing options you can visit Chankanaab Park which has a lagoon, botanical gardens and affords the opportunity to swim with bottlenose dolphins. There is also El Cedral that has a festival in May and San Gervasio that has huge Mayan ruins and an ancient temple, the sanctuary of the fertility goddess Ixchel. From Cozumel you can also visit Tulum, an ancient abandoned city now in ruins, with thousand-year-old Mayan treasures.

3) Los Cabos

Los Cabos is located at the tip of Baja California and includes the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, and the Resort Corridor. The main industry is tourism, though sport fishing continues to be one of the big draws. Other activities include diving, with great dive spots available and golfing. Los Cabos has some picturesque landscaping with its beaches, rock formations and bluffs. Within easy driving distance from Los Cabos’ two towns are many interesting sights like the quaint seaside city of La Paz, the majestic Sierra de la Laguna mountains, the beautiful sights of Baja California, and whale watching in the lagoons off the coast.
