Clairgustance Explained

Believers in the paranormal accept the existence of multiple worlds and realities. According to them, not all truths can be explained by laws of physics and/or nature. One of these is the extra-sensory phenomenon or ESP which enables an individual to acquire information through means other than the five physical senses. While clairvoyance and telepathy are the better known forms of ESP, there are some lesser known ones like clairgustance.

What is clairgustance?

Clairgustance is being aware of tastes without putting anything physically in the mouth. Literally it means clear tasting, from the French word for clear, “clair”. Like clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience and clairalience, this too refers to the psychic manifestation of a physical sense with which one can perceive the other worlds and communicate denizens of those worlds.

Clairgustance in the paranormal

According to believers in the paranormal, clairgustance is way to perceive, through taste, the essence of a substance from the spiritual or ethereal realms. They believe that in those who possess the ability for clairgustance, the sensation of what one tastes is often linked to a spirit on the other side. The effect is ultimately very similar to the normal sense of taste, but the items one tastes are not physically present. Mediums rely on clairgustance most often, to identify the source or reason for a message, or to communicate with the consciousness of a loved one who has passed. In this case the various tastes are directly associated with those they are communicating with. Psychics who work in law-enforcement or forensics, for example, benefit greatly from their ability to become aware of the taste of chemicals, drugs or blood. It often provides clues to how a victim died, or how they were kidnapped or murdered.

Clairgustance in parapsychology

While parapsychologists are open to the possibility that individuals with clairgustance can communicate with other worlds and its spirits, they further believe this an extra-sensory phenomena which can take diverse forms. For instance people with clairgustance abilities can taste something that someone else is eating or consuming. Thus a psychic with clairgustance may be having coffee or milk and instead experience the taste of alcohol in his/her mouth. According to believers in parapsychology, this may indicate that the psychic can communicate with the thoughts and emotions of the other person or even predict what is going to happen to the latter. Thus if a psychic with clairgustance is in a room where there are a lot of other people present and they are drinking or eating, he/she can also taste what it is they are consuming; since this is not always a pleasant state of affairs, an evolved psychic may also have the capacity to tune people out to prevent this from happening.

Clairgustance in mainstream psychology

Like the other clairs – clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience – clairgustance too is not validated by mainstream science. According to psychology, the ability to taste something without really putting anything in your mouth is a form of hallucination which at its simplest is defined as perception in the absence of an external stimulus. Psychologists would identity the psychic concept of clairgustance as gustatory hallucination. Such hallucinations are typically strange or unpleasant and are relatively common among individuals who have certain types of focal epilepsy, especially temporal lobe epilepsy. Psychologists believe that the regions of the brain responsible for gustatory hallucination in such cases are the insula and the superior bank of the sylvian fissure.

Experts in the paranormal and parapsychology believe that Clairgustance is seldom experienced on its own. In fact, it is very closely associated with clairalience or ‘clear smelling’, also known as ‘clairolfaction’. The two typically go together and it is not unusual for a psychic to experience a certain taste along with the accompanying smell or odor. Other than this, Clairgustance often also serves to enhance at least one of the other, more prominent psychic senses, such as clairvoyance  related to psychic vision, clairsentience or psychic feeling, clairaudience or psychic hearing and claircognizance or knowing through extra-sensory phenomena.
