Honeymoon in Iceland

To the regular couple Iceland may seem a formidable place of cold weather and snow-bound land and hardly apt for a sunny honeymoon. But in reality this country near the North Pole has an amazing array of attractions ranging from awesome nature to fascinating history, all of which are sure to make for the most amazing of honeymoons.

Fascinating Nature of the fjords

Located at the fringe of the Arctic world, Iceland has a fantastic geography where you and your new spouse can lose yourselves in the midst of the most amazing natural vistas. Many fjords punctuate its almost five thousand km-long coastline and Iceland has three national parks, the Vatnajökull National Park, Snæfellsjökull National Park, and Þingvellir National Park which showcase its wealth of volcanoes, geysers, valleys, lakes and other glacial formations. Snæfellsjökull is the glacier that crowns the end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Surrounding it is a national park, filled with birdlife, hiking treks and small fishing villages. Between Arnarstapi and Hellnar is a beautiful and easy hiking trek perfect for honeymooners who can take a romantic break at a nice little café by the seaside in Hellnar. If you wish to make memories for a lifetime, choose a summer day to trek up to the top of Snæfellsjökull glacier and standing on top of the glacier, look towards Reykjavík on one side and over Breiðafjörður on the other. You will find yourselves bathed in twilight of different shades of pink, orange, golden and purple and feel transported to a magical world. If you remember to bring a bottle of hot chocolate and a blanket with you on your trek, you can transform your trek into one of the most romantic picnics of your life.

Midnight Sun at Thorsmork valley

What better idea for a honeymoon than to romance your beloved bathed in the light of the midnight sun of the Thorsmork valley. This green valley is filled with beautiful rock formations, mountains, rivers and great hiking paths for every level. You can choose to sleep in Skagfjörðsskáli hut, Básar hut or you can bring your own tent and nestle in a small clearing. Thorsmork is known for having slightly better weather than its surroundings - but even if it rains, just get cozy with your beloved as you listen to the drops on the roof of your tent and recount the romantic story of Burnt Njal. Legend has it that Gunnar, a famous and strong Viking, had been outlawed but as he was riding out of Thorsmork he looked back and said that the hill was so beautiful that he would not leave – something that could happen to you and your spouse too as you soak in the magical beauty of this land.

Go Seal Watching

While glaciers, lakes and fjords form the best known natural features of Iceland, an exciting range of wildlife and a thriving culture also form the core of many an unforgettable Icelandic honeymoon. And one of the most interesting things you can do here is to take a seal-watching tour at the Iceland Seal Center at Hvammstangi. This center brings together a desire to showcase Iceland’s wealth of wildlife with a responsible style of tourism that is aware of the need to protect the delicate natural environment of the region. From here you can go on a delightful trip to the Vatnsnes Peninsula to watch these fascinating marine mammals in action. The center also has a crafts shop where you and your partner can explore local handicrafts and artifacts. Among other objectives of the Iceland Seal Center are furthering research in areas of sealery, seal products and seal-related farming besides fostering better understanding of environmental conservation of the whole northern coastal region. The Iceland Seal Center at Hvammstangi is open to visitors on all weekdays from June to August from nine in the morning to five in the evening. Through September visitors can explore the center from ten in the morning to two in the afternoon on weekdays.

Hike through the Reykjadalur Valley

If you are interested in enjoying the natural beauty of Iceland without venturing too far from the urban center, Reykjadalur is the perfect destination - a breathtaking valley just outside of Reykjavík, through which runs a warm river. It's warm all year round so you could possibly go there in the wintertime and sit in hot water whilst watching the Northern Lights. in summer you can hike up to Reykjadalur in the evening since it doesn't get dark even after evening; for romantic camping, bring a tent, sleeping bags (that you can zip up together!), a bottle of wine and maybe even some chocolate. Try to find a suitable place to camp on the banks of the river. Then enjoy a glass of wine with your loved one whilst sitting in warm water underneath the midnight sun. The following day you can jog down to the scenic village of Hveragerði for breakfast or make your way back to the capital city.

Breathtaking Blue Lagoon

No trip to Iceland is complete without a trip to the spectacular Blue Lagoon. Just catching a glimpse of the powder blue lagoon nestled in the black lava landscape is enough to make your jaws drop though like much else of the landscape in Iceland, it is holds amazing secrets. The water is an unbelievably pleasant 37 degrees and perfect for lazing around in – a romantic hour, or even three, could be whiled away just relaxing and soaking up the tranquil atmosphere of the lagoon with your other half. Best of all there's a full complement of spa treatments on offer, with products based on the minerals and clay found in the Blue Lagoon.

Explore the Nightlife

Most of the nightlife in Iceland is concentrated in cities like Reykjavík and Akureyri which is the largest town in Iceland outside of the Greater Reykjavík Area. Reykjavík is often dubbed "the nightlife capital of the north" and is famous for its nightlife during the weekends. Icelanders tend to go out late so bars that look rather quiet in the evening can fill up suddenly—usually after midnight on a weekend. There are over 100 different bars and clubs in Reykjavík; most of them are located on Laugavegur and its side streets. It is very common for an establishment that is a café before dinner to turn into a bar late into the evening. Rex, a weekend-only nightclub in Reykjavík, is as famous for its velvet couches and chandeliers as for its stylish crowd. Another place to head for if you and your partner are looking to rub shoulders with the smart set is the Thorvaldsen Bar. This popular restaurant and bar transforms into a nightclub on the weekends and hosts different theme nights during the week as well as groovy DJs on the weekends. However if you wish to indulge in classier tastes, how about attending an artistic event at the Culture House or treat your beloved to a romantic dinner at the Apótek which is considered to be one of Reykjavík's trendiest restaurants. Here the ambience is not only fantastic but more importantly, food is a satisfying, creative fusion of styles, forms, and variable ingredients. In the other city of Akureyri, some places where you can come across the well-heeled set are posh fine dining destinations
like the Karolina, Friðrik V and Staðurinn.

If possible, plan your honeymoon to Iceland at the time of the New Year. The arrival of the New Year is a particular cause for celebration to the people of Reykjavík. Icelandic law states that anyone may purchase and use fireworks during a certain period around New Year's Eve. As a result, every New Year's Eve the city is lit up with fireworks displays which could make for the most memorable backdrop to romance your beloved.
