How to Meet Asian Men and Women in NYC

The cosmopolitan essence of New York City is evident from its demographic distribution. In 2005 the city’s population was estimated to be at more than 8.2 million according to figures provided by the New York City Department of City Planning. Of this number as high as 36 percent are thought to be foreign-born. Around 800 languages are spoken in New York City making it perhaps the most linguistically diverse city in the world. to a great extent this demographic diversity has been driven by arrival of migrants from different parts of Asia. if you are interested in getting to know men and women of this ethnicity, here are a few ways to go about it.

Explore the neighborhoods

Asians in the United States are the fastest growing minority group in the US1 – bypassing the Hispanic community – and the trend is clearly seen in NYC which has a vast number of enclaves of Asian ethnicities. such neighborhoods are usually stacked with grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, DVD rentals and karaoke bars, all of which make great opportunities to chat up men and women of the community. among people of Asian origin in NYC, the Chinese are in largest numbers and in fact The New York City Metropolitan Area contains the largest ethnic Chinese population outside of Asia. the city has at least 9 Chinatowns, including the original Manhattan Chinatown; there are three in Queens and these are the Flushing Chinatown, the Elmhurst Chinatown, and the newly emerged Chinatown in Corona. Brooklyn too has three distinct Chinese enclaves known as the Sunset Park Chinatown, the Avenue U Chinatown, and the Bensonhurst Chinatown. other places around NYC too have liberal sections of the population and there is one Chinatown each in Edison, New Jersey and Nassau County, Long Island.

TIP: Match.com has many Asian men and women looking for someone to date.

The Filipino population in NYC is mainly concentrated in Woodside, Queens which is also known as "Little Manila" extending along Roosevelt Avenue. here Filipino restaurants dominate the area while other Filipino-owned businesses like freight and remittance centers, professional services like medical, dental, optical clinics, driving schools, beauty salons, immigration services, and video rental places providing the latest movies from the Philippines dot the community. Jollibee, a famous fast-food chain in the Philippines, opened its first branch in New York on February 2009, selecting Woodside, Queens and was soon followed by Red Ribbon Bakeshop, a sister company of Jollibee. In the East Village/Lower East Side also there is a significant Filipino community while in Brooklyn, A Little Manila can be found in Canarsie that has Filipino stores, rental places, and restaurants.

Korean communities in New York include Koreatown in Manhattan, Bedford Park in the Bronx, and Sunnyside, Woodside, Elmhurst, Flushing, Bayside, Douglaston, and Little Neck, in Queens. all these places are choc-a-bloc with Korean diners, grocery stores and karaoke bars where you can easily bump into an attractive Asian sampling fresh greens or checking out the latest DVDs of Korean TV dramas.

Find out about associations

with more and more Asians arriving in NYC and playing a major role in the economy of the city, there are now a vast number of businesses, professional and cultural associations made of Asian Americans of NYC. the National Association of Asian American People, Asian Women in Business, Asian American Bar Association are only a few based on professional and business networking. an even larger number of cultural associations exist like Asian Cinevison, Asian American Arts Alliance, Asian American Writers Workshop. in fact if you wish to meet men and women of particular Asian cultures, you can even streamline your search of Asian cultural associations to join. The Philippine Consulate of New York for instance has a school called Paaralan sa Konsulado or School at the Consulate, which teaches new-generation Filipino Americans about their culture and language. known as the Philippine Center, this is a good place to drop in if you wish to meet singles of Filipino origin. for those of you wanting to meet singles of Chinese origin can check out cultural organizations founded by members of the community like the China Institute, Chinese Progressive Association, Coral Springs Chinese Cultural Association and NY Chinese Cultural Center in fact you can even narrow down your search to particular localities like a Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island. the Korean community is also pretty culturally active in NYC and has associations like the Korea Society and Korean Cultural Service New York for the promotion of Korean culture and aesthetics in New York through gallery exhibitions, performing arts concerts, film festivals, and educational programs. .

Watch the Parades

One of the most enjoyable ways to get to know singles from various Asian communities would be to be part of their parades and other cultural celebrations. In NYC’s Chinese community, the Lunar New Year Parade is a highly anticipated event and rightly too, what with spectacular floats, costumes, masked dances and celebrations. The parade usually winds throughout Chinatown down Mott, along East Broadway, up Eldridge Street to Forsyth. the Philippine Forum also hosts an annual festival at the Hart Playground in commemoration of Filipino American History Month.  New York City also hosts the annual Philippine Independence Day Parade along Madison Avenue on the first Sunday of June. It is also said to be one of the largest parades of any kind in the city and the largest Philippine celebration in the United States. This celebration is a combination of a parade and a street fair. Madison Avenue bursts on this day with Filipino culture, colors and people and is attended by many important political figures, entertainers and civic groups.  In the Korean community, perhaps the biggest street event is the Annual Korean Parade & Festival. The street fair offers authentic cuisine and products, Korean dance and a Korean popular music festival too known as the K-Pop Festival – all of which make great dating opportunities.

Frequent Asian hangouts

Since such processions and parades are occasional, it makes much more sense to frequent hangouts which are popular with the younger generation of Asian Americans. If you have your sights set on Korean girls and guys, it may be worth your while to drop in on Circle and U2 Karaoke in Manhattan while other club spots in K-town are Maru Lounge on 32nd St, and Third Floor Cafe on 5th Avenue. Then there is the China Club which has long been known as one of the hottest party spots in the city alike. While the original China Club on Manhattan's Upper West Side closed  in 1997, in January next year the new China Club opened in the center of Manhattan's refurbished entertainment district - Times Square and drew scores of A-list celebrities from the fields of music, sports, film, fashion and Broadway, and thousands of happy party-goers alike. The Park in Chelsea, Tenjune in West Village and Pacha in Hell’s Kitchen are other clubs with liberal sprinkling of Asian men and women grooving to music and having a good time.
