How Many Types of Herpes Are There? What Is the Difference?

The most common types are genital herpes and oral herpes, also called cold sores. Genital herpes are found in the genital area or surrounding it. It can affect the glans, penis, the outer and inner lips of the vulva, and any other area in which the actual sexual contact was performed. Oral herpes are usually found in the lips and they are known for a characteristic blister which turns afterwards into an ulcer. However, there are many varieties of herpes presentation, and one of them is the herpetic whitlow, which appears in the fingers or thumbs. It can also be spread through a nerve that runs across our face called trigeminal nerve, and travel to the brain causing viral encephalitis and meningitis. Finally, neonatal herpes can infect other mucosal membranes such as that in the baby’s eyes, sometimes being quite difficult to treat.
