Can You Breastfeed With Herpes?

The Herpes virus is not transmitted through breast milk so it is safe to breastfeed your baby without fear of infecting him or her. However it is of utmost importance that you take sufficient precautions so as to lower the risk of transmission since a cold sore on your face, mouth and breasts would be enough to cause transmission of the virus. To avoid this always keep a clean blanket between you and the baby. Enforce strict hygiene by washing your hands thoroughly after going to the bathroom. If there is a sore on the breast or near the nipple certainly do not breastfeed from that side until the lesion has completely disappeared.
