Does Herpes Lead to a Missed Period in Women?

The menstrual cycle is regulated by the presence of Luteinizing hormone, LH, and follicle-stimulating hormone, FSH, as they are in charge of promoting ovulation and stimulating the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. The herpes virus is not linked to any changes in hormone balance so a herpes infection does not provoke women to miss their periods. However women who have contracted the herpes virus are more likely to suffer an outbreak during the menstrual period. It is thought that hormonal changes in the body cause an imbalance in the immune system that facilitates the virus to cause more symptoms.
