The various nuances of married life have been captured for the full screen by many able directors. These are romantic movies that can be watched by married couples, all snuggled up together with a bucket of popcorn.
- Fire proof (2008)
Directed by Alex Kendrick and starring Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea. Kirk Cameron stars as a very committed fire man but whose marriage with Bethea is downhill. In this situation, his father presents him to take up a 40 day experiment known as the “Love Dare”. It is a last shot at saving his marriage. Cameron carries on the dare despite being constantly rejected by his embittered wife. When he asks his father how he can show love to a person who does not return it, his father likens it to God loving us despite our not returning that love. How Cameron saves his marriage forms the end of the plot.
- Heartburn (1986)
Directed by Mike Nichols, this movie is based on the novel by Nora Ephron which is a mirror of her marriage to journalist Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame. Meryl Streep plays Rachel, a successful food critic who after a whirl wind romance marries a charming columnist Mark played by Jack Nicholson. However he cannot give up his philandering ways and Rachel gives up her job to save her marriage. When Rachel announces that she is pregnant, at first he is delighted but soon writhes at the prospect of fatherhood and responsibility. He starts with a fresh round of philandering. Meryl Streep’s real life daughter Mamie Gummer also stars as Rachael’s daughter.
- Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005)
Directed by Darren Grant and features Kimberly Elise, Steve Harris, Shemar Moore, Tamara Taylor and Lisa Marcos. The story of a woman who has been betrayed by her husband and needs to take time to love again. Kimberly Elise is the protagonist who is ditched by her husband of 18 years on their anniversary. Kimberly moves into the home of her feisty Grandma Madea, played by Tyler Perry who is the author of the stage play from which the movie is derived. Now Kimberly is pursued by a handsome man, Orlando but is too scared to trust her feelings with another man.
- The Marriage Counselor (2008)
Directed by Darren Grant and Tyler Perry starring Tamar Davis, Palmer Williams, Jr., Tony Grant, A.T. Grayson and Myra Beasley. This story revolves around the relationship between a hardworking accountant and his wife who is a marriage counselor. Roger Jackson works hard to support his family and his wife Judith dishes out advice to couples facing marital troubles. But Judith is unable to save her own marriage and faces a moment of truth when an old friend drops by her office.
- When a Man Loves a Woman
Directed by Luis Mandoki, the movie is about the marriage between an airline pilot played by Andy Garcia and his alcoholic wife played by Meg Ryan. An accident forces Ryan to rethink on her alcoholic problem and she enters rehab. She emerges from rehab strong, straight and confident and it is the turn of Gracia who is unable to adjust with her new composure and wants back his old weak and dependant wife. Now they enter into fresh family counseling.
- What’s Love Got to do with it (1993)
Directed by Brian Gibson and starring Angela Basset and Laurence Fishburne in leading roles. It traces of the real life story of Tina Turner and her relationship with husband Ike. After a few scenes detailing Tina’s life as a struggling singer in Nutbush, the story shifts to that of Ike Turner taking her under his wings. Ike is an established songwriter and producer but he gradually becomes jealous and abusive when Tina’s career takes off. How she breaks free of his domination forms the rest of the story.
- Revolutionary Road (2008)
Directed by Sam Mendes and starring the ‘Titanic couple”, Learnodo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet. It tells the story of a Connecticut couple, Frank and April whose idealistic marriage deteriorates into a conventional union with its petty jealousies and abandoned dreams. April wants to break free and head to Paris while Frank wants to preserve their life together.
- Solaris (2002)
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, it stars George Clooney and Natascha McElhoneas the lead pair. It is a science fiction plot woven into a romantic story. Clooney is a therapist who travels through outer space to a space station where the astronauts are traumatized by mysterious entities- the forms of people whom they have loved and lost to death. He is at first dubious but when he is visited by the apparition of his dear and dead wife; he begins to be obsessed and borders on losing his sanity.
- Unfaithful (2002)
Diane Lane is a flirtatious wife and Richard Gere her suspicious husband. On a winter trip to Manhattan, New York, Lane has a chance encounter with Olivier Martinez playing a handsome French man. Before he leaves him, Lane is presented with a book of Persian poetry by Martinez. On returning home, she mentions her encounter in passing to Gere, but it is soon obvious that she gets obsessed with her French suitor. She makes a trip to the city only to call on him. Soon they start a steamy affair and grow bolder by the day. Now Gere who is suspicious hires a private detective who confirms his worst fears. He decides to confront Martinez, a decision that will haunt him. Adrian Lyne's film was inspired by Claude Chabrol's acclaimed 1969 film La Femme Infidele.
- Intersection (1994)
Directed by Mark Rydell, the movie stars Richard Gere as a man who is on the tip of death as the car which he is driving is heading to a collision with a trailer truck. This sparks a series of reminiscences that come to him, moment before he crashes. These includes the pictures of his relationship with three women- his wife, his mistress and his daughter.
