Ten Bitter Sweet Romantic Movies

Romantic movies come in surprising packages. There are rom-coms (romantic comedies), holiday romances and even romantic horror movies. Some leave a bitter sweet taste in the senses. Some of the best of bitter sweet romantic movie are:
 

  1. Grease

    A musical tale of teen love in the 1950’s. It’s California in 1959, and teenagers, greaser Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Australian Sandy Olsen (Olivia Newton- John) are in love. They have a great summer on the beach but what they don’t know is that they are both heading to the same high school Rydell High. Danny becomes the leader of a gang of black jacket Greasers named T-birds while Sandy hangs out with the Pink ladies- a group of pink wearing teen girls. The rest of the movie is about the clash and romance between Danny and Sandy.
     
  2. Ten Items or Less

    Morgan Freeman stars as a famous actor who has not taken up an acting role since four years and is on the verge of accepting a movie project. The project director’s cousin drops him off at Archie’s Ranch Market in Carson to do a little research on the same. He becomes captivated by a Spanish woman, Scarlet (Paz Vega) who has a spontaneous ability to manage the cash register. She loathes her job where she is stuck at the 10 items or less cash register. Freeman chats with her and when her shift ends, requests her for a ride. During the rest of the evening, Freeman helps her prepare for a job interview and he learns a lesson about commitment from her. This movie is about the power of human contact however brief to alter the course of lives.


     
  3. Roman holiday

    Famous for the endearing story of a princess played by Audrey Hepburn on a day out in Rome. The story is about Princess Anne who is on a highly public tour of European capitals. When she and her entourage arrive in Rome she feels like rebelling against her strict, regimented life. One night, she eludes her staff, sneaking out of her room and escapes her royal confinement on the back of a pickup truck. But she soon falls asleep on a public bench and is found by Joe Bradley an American reporter stationed in Rome. Bradley played by the dapper Cary Grant takes her to his apartment without realizing her true identity. But next morning he realizes his good fortune and decides to make a story of his encounter with the princess. They spend an exciting day together and at night the Princess remindful of the duty towards her country returns to the palace. Now it is upon Bradley to publicize his Roman holiday with the princess but finds himself unable to do so, having fallen in love with her. He presents her with the photos of her adventures in Rome secretly at a press meeting and then the two part ways, each to his and her duty with only the memory of their love. This is one of the most bitter-sweet endings of  a movie ever made.
     
  4. I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry

    This is the story of two single and straight firefighters of Brooklyn who take on the guise of a gay couple in order to get hold of domestic partner benefits. Directed by Dennis Dugan, this comic movie stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James in the lead roles. Chuck and Larry are two friends and fellow fire fighters. Larry is mourning the death of his wife and worried about the future of his two children if he is harmed in the line of his duty. But he cannot leave his job as he counts on the pension for his family. Now, Larry saves Chuck's life on one of his calls. Chuck asks him for a chance to repay his favor and Larry requests him to pretend with him as a gay couple so that they can enjoy domestic benefits and ensure the future of his children. Chronic womanizer that he is, Chuck is initially mortified but agrees eventually.
     
  5. American Graffiti

    Directed by George Lucas, the movie stars Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard and Paul Le Mat. Two high school students are set to leave to college in the morning. Each of them is full of doubts. They spend a last evening cruising the strip and try to have every possible adventure before dawn when they will be faced with making a choice on what they will have to do.
     
  6. Juno (2007)

    Starring the talented Ellen Page as a pregnant teen who has to decide what to do with her unborn child. This is the story of 16 year old Juno, who discovers she is pregnant after an encounter with her best friend Bleeker, one fall. While waiting in an abortion clinic, Juno changes her mind and decides to have her child and put it for adoption. She gets into contact with an upscale yuppie couple who meets Juno and sign papers with her. A year later, things take a surprising turn and all is not what is predicted.
     
  7. Forrest Gump (1994)

    An academy award winning performance by Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, a simple man with a very low I.Q but with a loyal and loving heart. His heart is set from childhood on Jenny, the only person who is kind to him other than his doting mother. But Jenny slips away from his grasp and the rest of his life, he is waiting for her. During that period, Gump has an extraordinary life when he witnesses historic events meets people like president Kennedy, wins medals after serving in Vietnam, starts a ping-pong craze, creates bumper stickers and inspires songs. Though tragedy strikes and he loses his loving mother, the story has a happy ending when he is re-united with his sweetheart Jenny.
     
  8. My Fair Lady (1964)

    The cult classic was written by Bernard Shaw and won an  Oscar for leading man Rex Harrison. Harrison is professor Henry Higgins, a misogynistic and snobbish phonetic professor. A witty adaptation from a Broadway musical of the same name, the story starts with Higgins taking a wager with his friend Colonel Pickering to change a dirty Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle (played with élan by a glowing Audrey Hepburn) into a high society beauty. After she is trained in all the social graces and phonetics, she makes her debut in London society at the Ascot horse races and makes a splash, even winning the affection of a young aristocrat, Freddy Eynsford Hill.  Eliza is in love with her Professor but when he refuses to allow her any credit for her transformation and takes all the accolades for himself, she gets angry and leaves him for Freddy. Left alone, Professor Higgins realizes that he has grown accustomed to Eliza’s face and has feelings for her. Can he win her back? – watch the movie.
     
  9. Edward Scissor hands (1990)

    A fairy tale about an unusually gentle young man played by Johny Depp and directed by Tim Burton. Depp is Edward who lives in a castle, high on a hill, the greatest creation off his eccentric inventor. The inventor dies before he can finish Edwards’s hand so is s left with scissors for his hand. So Scissorhand, Edward, remains isolated in his castle until he meets and falls in love with a teenage girl played by Winnona Ryder. The love story has a tragic ending.
     
  10. Little Women (1994)

    Based on the popular book by Louisa Mary Alcott, it is the story of four young women Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy who are sisters. The March sisters are growing up in post-civil war America when their father is way at the front fighting in the war. Susan Sarandon plays Mrs. March, their mother, who rears her children to be compassionate and resolute in the face of adverse circumstances. The lives of the sister’s change as love and romance enter their lives even as they battle small tragedies.
