10 Romantic Christmas Movies

Christmas is the time for Santa Claus, Christmas trees and mistletoe. Many romantic movies have been made revolving around Christmas time. Some of the movies with Christmas as a backdrop are as below:
- It’s a Wonderful Life
The quintessential X’ mas movie that captures the hearts of movie watchers even when it is played again and again, every X’mas on T.V. The story goes thus: George Bailey is a selfless man who has given up his whole life for the residents of Bedford Falls. He is engaged in a battle with property developer Mr. Potter who wants to take over the whole town. One Christmas, George Bailey is drawn into a financial crisis when he comes up 8000 dollars short at the bank that he runs. A depressed Bailey contemplates suicide thinking his family and friends are better off without him. But God sends down an angel named Clarence to show him what the town would have been like, if he had not been born.
- Surviving Christmas
Ben Affleck stars as Drew Latham who is a lonely, wealthy executive. He finds himself totally alone one Christmas and decided to spend his X’mas with his family to relive his childhood memories. But Latham finds that his childhood home has changed forever and is inhabited by a new family. He also starts an unlikely romance.
- The Santa Clause 2
Scott Calvin has been Santa for many years and his elves think the world of him. He now faces a deadline- he has to get married by Christmas or he will no longer be Santa. But finding a wife for Santa is a difficult task.
- White Christmas
This is a 1954 Christmas movie. A song and dance partnership sees Bob Wallace and Phil Davis taste success on Broadway in the period after the Second World War. . They take on a night club act by the Haynes sisters, Betty and Judy whose brother served with them in the war. Phil wants to play cupid for Bob and Betty and arranges to follow the sisters who are booked for a show in a Vermont Lodge. When the teams arrive there, Phil and Bob are shocked to find that the resort is run by their old general, Tom Waverley who is seeing bad days. The four of them decide to help the general and after a few misunderstandings and twists, find love with each other.
- The Family Stone
The Stone family is getting together for Christmas. The prodigal son, Everett Stone brings to his home his fiancé, an uptight and conservative woman named Meredith Morton. Meredith faces the ire and hostility of the entire Stone family. A desperate Meredith asks her sister Julie to join her for Christmas for moral support. Surprisingly, Julie is liked by all the Stones. Meredith storms off on Christmas Eve after a show down with the family. Everett, Julie and younger brother, Ben go after Meredith. Also, one by one, the Stones learn about a secret kept by their mother, Sybil.
- Noel
It is Christmas time in New York and a lonely divorced woman Rose Collins hopes for a miracle to improve the condition of her mother who is hospitalized with Alzheimer’s. She meets another patient and shares her sorrow with the latter’s visitor. Another woman Nina Vasquez breaks her engagement with fiancé Mike due to his intolerable jealousy but continues to miss him. Mike is stalked by a stranger, a bar tender by the name, Artie Venezuela. Jules Calvert cannot endure the holidays alone and wants to reenact the wonderful Christmas he spent in hospital as a teenager. The lives of these characters cross during the night before Christmas.
- The Family Man
A modern day Frank Capra story, Jack Campbell (Nicholas Cage) is living the perfect life a successful, single executive. He thinks he has everything. One day he wakes up to find himself in a new life, where he has not left his college sweetheart for a London trip. He is now happily married to Kate, has two kids and lives in Jersey. He yearns for his past life where he worked for 13 hard years to be the president of an investment house and is not a tire sales man at Big Ed’s. He drives a Ferrari and not a mini van and does not wake up to kids jumping on the bed. Though beginning in this negative way, things seem better as the days progress and he learns to appreciate his new life.
- The Holiday
Stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two lonely women who find love after they swap their homes for the holidays. In London, Iris Simpkins writes a wedding column and holds an unrequited love for colleague Jasper Bloom. Her world collapses when nearing X’mas, Jasper announce his engagement to another woman. In Los Angeles, Amanda Woods, a movie trailer maker has just split up from Ethan, her philandering boyfriend. Chancing upon a home swapping site on the net, Amanda swaps her home for Iris’s cottage in Surrey for the X’ mas holidays. While in Surrey, Amanda meets and falls in love with Iris’s brother and book editor, Graham.
Meanwhile Iris meets her elderly neighbor and screenplay writer Arthur who helps her improve her self esteem. She also finds love in the arms of film composer Miles.
- Miracle on 34th Street
The story of a little girl who finds that dreams come true if only you believe in them. Six year old Susan is cynical about Santa Claus. She heard the story of Santa from her mother a long time back but does not expect to get the gifts on her list. All this changes when she meets up with a Santa in a department store who is convinced that he is the real thing. Susan gets the most precious gift of all- a Santa to believe in.
- The Christmas card
Cody Cullen, a US Army sergeant ends his stay in Afghanistan when he is sent to return the private possessions to the bride of fellow soldier Jonesy killed in action. On his way he meets Faith Spellman who sends Christmas cards to lonely soldiers at the front. By chance, Cody saves the life of Faith’s father Luke from a bad car crash. The grateful Spellmans invite Cody to dinner on Christmas day. Luke begins to like Cody and wants him to be his son-in-law. But Faith, though charmed by Cody, is reluctant to leave her elusive fiancé, Paul.
