10 Romantic Movies of the 2000s

The new millennium has seen a slew of wonderful romantic movies released in its early years. These are of different genres like romantic comedy, historic romance,    romantic horror movies or holiday romances.

The top ten romantic movies of the 2000’s would be as follows:
 

  1. You’ve Got Mail (1998)

    A modern day remake of the classic, “Shop around the Corner“ re-unites ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ pair Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan as Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly. Joe Fox is the predatory large book store owner who is trying to drive out of business, Kelly’s small children’s bookstore. The two are engaged in a bitter public battle. In a twist of fate, Fox and Kelly have started an anonymous online correspondence and fallen in love with each other virtually. It is Fox who discovers the identity of his online love and begins to try and get to like her but Kelly will have none of it. But as happy endings go, the two are united finally.
     
  2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind (2004)

    Directed by Michel Gondry and starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. Carrey plays Joel Barish who is shocked to discover that his lady love, Clementine has undergone  a procedure to erase all memories of him and their tumultuous affair. So he decides to do the same and approaches the inventor of the procedure , Dr. Howard Mierzwaik. But even as the process of erasing his memories begins, Barish renews his passion for Clementine and tries desperately to stop the process. As Dr.Mierzwaik and his team try to erase his memories, Barish struggles  to keep them as fresh as ever.


     
  3. Love Actually (2003)

    It follows the love lives of eight people whose fate is loosely intertwined in the frantic days before Christmas in London. The movie has a big British cast and is directed by Richard Curtis. It is Christmas time in London and 8 people grapple with their love lives. Some are losing their love, others falling in love, some others  single and lonely and a general air of confusion prevails. All ends well at the Heathrow airport.
     
  4. Broke back mountain (2005)

    Ang Lee’s tribute to cowboy love. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal star as a pair of cowboys who meet up and enjoy a summer together. Ang Lee captures this passionate affair against the sweeping Alberta landscape. The two lovers carry on with their secret affair, meeting intermittently and carrying on with their lives separately married to women.
     
  5. Once (2006)

    A nameless guy is a musician by night, singing his heart out on the streets of Dublin and soliciting tips. By day he works with his father repairing vacuum cleaners. A name less Czech girl plays the piano when she gets a chance and  does odd jobs the whole day long to take care of her mother and daughter by night. Guy encounters girl and Girl helps Guy put together a disccontaining his music to take to London in the hope of getting a song contract. In the course of their association, they discuss about past loves and also begin to express to each other the love they feel for each other especially through her songs.
     
  6. Amelie (2001)

    Starring the adorable Audrey Tatou as the sweet, naive Parisian Amelie. Growing up in a dysfunctional family with her father bringing her up in a strict and protective environment, she takes up the job as a waitress in Paris. Soon she builds up her own magical world trying to do favors and help people she comes across in her daily line of duty. Somewhere along the way, she pursues a love story of her own.
     
  7. Lost in Translation (2003)

    Bill Murray is Bob Harris, an American actor beyond his prime who is visiting Tokyo to film a commercial. Scarlett Johansson is Charlotte a young and bored wife of a visiting photographer. Bob and Charlotte make unlikely travelling companions and encounter hilarious situations due to the cultural and language incompatibility with the Japanese. Meantime they must sort out the problems they face in their lives- meaninglessness and boredom.
     
  8. Before Sunset (2004)

    Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star as Jesse and Celine who meet again in Paris after nine years. Jesse is in Paris for promoting his latest book and Celine is working for an environment protection agency. They reminisce about the time they spent getting acquainted on a trip from Budapest to Vienna nine years back. Since they have only a few hours before Jesse’ plane leaves, they stroll through Paris sharing their experiences, and delving into whether they still have feelings for  each other despite Jesse being married with a kid.
     
  9. Slum dog Millionaire (2008)

    It is the bitter sweet tale of Jamal Malik, a Mumbai slum boy who is on the verge of winning the fanciest game show on Indian T.V. - a version of Who wants to be a Millionaire. Just one step away from winning the prize money, he is arrested by the police and interrogated for cheating – how can a slum boy know all the answers? Now Jamal reveals his story - how every question of the contest is linked to a particular incident in his life. Also revealed is the passionate tale of his love story for Latika his childhood friend whom he has loved and lost. Now Jamal stands at the threshold of gaining money and his long lost love. Directed by Danny Boyle and starring Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto in the lead.
     
  10. Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

    Adam Sandler is Barry Egan, a small business owner dominated by his seven sisters and having a zero love life. One morning a harmonium comes to him and also a striking young, mysterious woman asks him for help with her car. She comes back to him after a few days and there seems to be sparks flying between them. But can he resolve his complicated life and get time for love?
