Despite the presence of several strong female personalities in the country’s politics, Filipino women continue to struggle against a patriarchal mindset. Though the service and skilled sectors have more women professionals than ever, only very few are able to make it to the top management levels. In the entire labor force of the island, women workers are more to be found in the unskilled and unorganized sector. Women's wages and salaries are generally lower than men's and women earn far less than men for equivalent work. On the domestic front too, Filipino women have to deal with a traditional ethos according to which the man is the head of the family and it is a wife’s duty to obey him. Women thus often end up working both outside and within the house and yet find it difficult to earn the respect and reward that they deserve. So if you are keen to make a good impression on your Filipino girlfriend, treat her with respect and dignity. If you are in a relationship already, don’t automatically assume that she will do your laundry and dishes. As educated and professional Filipinas become more aware of repressive gender roles, they are going to look for male partners who can make for a more equitable relationship.

Due to American influence in the past, Philippines has a history of women marrying foreign men and settling in the US. Now with rising levels of education and material aspirations, women in  now no longer want to settle down to a subservient way of life. After being at the receiving end of patriarchal culture for centuries, modern Filipinas feel the need to opt for a life which is free of gender biases and is more respectful of their input, both at the domestic front as well as the professional field. Thus foreign men especially from western societies like USA, Australia and Europe are highly coveted as potential partners by Filipino women. They believe that western men will not only afford them a more comfortable life but also be more supportive as partners – for instance pitch in with the housework and take an active part in raising the kids. So if you are a guy from the US or Western Europe, you can use this preference to your advantage. Make your Filipina girlfriend feel loved and secure.
