Can Cold Sores Cause Genital Herpes?

Not thought probably until recently, the HSV type 1 virus that causes cold sores is now become an increasingly common cause for genital herpes. Until recently nearly all cases of genital Herpes were caused by the HSV virus type 2 which does not cause cold sores in the mouth. Recent statistics from the UK say that as much as 60% of the new genital herpes infections are being caused by the HSV type 1 virus instead of the HSV type 2. Some theories suggest that it is due to a lowering of the age at which kids are becoming sexually active. Since the younger you are the less likely you are to have immunity to HSV type 1. Kissing or even touching the lips of someone with an active cold sore caused by HSV type 1 can lead to genital herpes if you then touch your own genitalia.
