10 Romantic Horror Movies You Must See

It is Valentine’s Day and you may be tired of the usual soppy, sentimental cinema. How about some excitement in the romance like romantic horror movies? Watch the chainsaw and machete all swing into action and you can experience the creepiest chills and thrills. The ten romantic horror movies are:
- Candyman (1992)
It is not a conventional love story. Virgina Madsen plays a well educated college researcher studying urban legends in Chicago’s Cabrini Green – where a scary urban legend is stalking people. Tony Todd stars as a handsomely tall ghetto boogeyman. Bernard Rose’ adaptation of Clive Barker’s short story does not pair up Madsen and Todd. Instead they are rivals and partners in a thrilling journey. Madsen and Todd play out good and evil against the beautiful score by Philip Glass.
- Twilight
This is perhaps the most successful romantic horror movies ever made. It is about a young vampire (Robert Pattinson) in love with a human played by Kristin Stewart. The story is about how the young vampire desists from biting the object of his love and tries to protect her from other vampires who have no such inhibitions. This love story has become as popular as it has spawned many sequels. The story touches your heart and the cast give a highly sensitive performance.
- Bram stoker’s Dracula (1992)
The best vampire story and that too of Dracula is the most colorful of them all. Set in Victorian England, the movie by Francis Ford Coppola traces the story of Dracula through a series of letters by Bram Stoker. The movie features beautiful sets, splendid garments and intriguing characters. Gary Oldman as Dracula is in love with Winona Ryder and Sadie Frost. Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing is intent on ending the spread of vampirism. The movie is worthwhile for its alluring sets, dramatic visual effects and haunting musical score.
- The Corpse Bride
Tim Burton uses stark and bleak imagery to tell the tale of a young man who accidentally proposes to a corpse. It is a bizarre love story. The plot thickens when the young man starts to have feelings for the corpse. He is faced with the choice of joining her in her world or returning to his other girl friend in real life. This movie is enjoyable for couples celebrating Valentine’s Day together while some may find it too creepy and bizarre.
- The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
The Ghost in this movie is not at all scary like in most horror movies but is a salty old soldier keeping company with a lonely woman. It is a witty, romantic tale and one of the most unlikely love stories. In 1900, stubborn widow Lucy Muir decides to live in Gull Cottage by the British seaside, despite it being suspected to be haunted. True enough, on her first night in the cottage; she meets the ghost of salty old soldier and crusty former owner Captain Gregg. Lucy refuses to be scared off. In fact, they become thick friends and Lucy gets used to the presence of a man's ghost haunting her bedroom. But when another charming and living man comes as a prospective suitor, Lucy and the ghostly captain must deal with their feelings for each other. Do see it for the sparkling chemistry between the ghost and the lady.
- Cat people
A tragic love story but one of the best movies to watch on Valentine’s Day or Halloween. It is not a romantic film per se and is the story of a beautiful woman whose love life is ruined because she is going to be cursed to turn into a big black cat. This is a truly horrible situation and watch the story of the poor woman.
- Ghost
One of the best and most romantic super natural stories ever made. Patrick Swayze is the murdered husband of Demi Moore whose spirit refuses to leave her side to protect her from further danger. Swayze and Moore make contact through a psychic played with gusto by Whoopi Goldberg. An enduring image of this movie is a pottery class by Swayze and Moore before his death. His spirit gets redemption after he punishes his murderer who happens to be his former colleague and best friend. The background score is famous.
- King Kong
A typical Hollywood love story. Gigantic ape monster falls in love with blond lovely woman and flees to Empire State Building along with her. There is plenty of action with careening police cars and people running helter-skelter at the sight of this monster. A love story with a difference. The blonde is an out of work actress in love with a director who tries to rescue her from the clutches of King Kong, the big gorilla with whom she develops a special bond. The film has a tragic ending.
- An American Werewolf in London
Two American tourists in England are bitten by a Werewolf whose existence is denied by locals. One dies, the other is mauled. The werewolf dies but returns to its human form. The surviving student begins to have nightmares of hunting on four feet at first but then finds that his friend and other recent victims appear to him, demanding that he find a way to die to release them from their curse. They are trapped between worlds because of their unnatural deaths.
- Dance of the Dead
Imagine a prom night where some guests are zombies, the spirit of dead high school friends. The movie has it all – Zombies emerging out of graves and starting to chase, demented nerds, brave cheerleaders, real guitar heroes, mad teachers, violence, gore and blood but most important - a love story. It is prom night in Middle America. But when the dead unexpectedly rise from their graves to eat the living, it's up to the geeks, the nerds, the outcast and the losers who couldn't get dates to the dance to save the town from the zombies. These unlikely heroes rise to the occasion when they set apart their differences and join together to fight for their lives. This odd group of high-school teens armed with bats, sledgehammers, garden tools and guitars spend an unforgettable prom night.
