10 Romantic Movies about Unrequited Love

Unrequited love is a painful feeling and most of us have experienced it at some time or other in our lives. So some great movies have been made on this theme which may make you want those tissues and have a good cry, while you experience the agony faced by those unlucky in love. Some of these movies are also comic tales which will give you a good laugh.

  1. Days of summer (2009)

    The story of a boy in love with a girl who does not return his affection. When Summer Fin leaves his life for good, Tom Hansen reflects on the one summer they spent together. Summer was an average girl but Tom fell head over heels for her knowing that she was the one with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. But Sumer is a cynic and does not believe in love or boyfriends. How Tom deals with this situation depends on his two pals McKenzie and Paul and his adolescent sister Rachel.
     
  2. Dumb and Dumber

    Lloyd Christmas is loser of a limo driver who finds a bag left by  a beautiful woman named Mary in his car and with whom he falls in love. In a bid to return the bag to Mary, he solicits the help of an equally dumb partner named Harry. The two dumb men head for Aspen where Mary is stationed. Unknown to them, a few criminals are also after the bag. Things take a hilarious turn in Aspen when Lloyd and Harry, both in love with Mary struggle with each other for her affection.


     
  3. Sabrina (1954)

    Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn) is the daughter of the chauffer of a wealthy family. The two scions of the family, Linus and David are poles apart. Linus is all work and no play while David is a philanderer and playboy. Sabrina has been in love with David all her life but he barely notices her. That is, until she returns from a Paris finishing school as an elegant and sophisticated woman. Now David and Linus are captivated by Sabrina and the two brothers fight for her affection. Sabrina finds herself shifting her affection from David to Linus.
     
  4. My Best Friend’s wedding

    Julia Roberts is a woman who finds that her best friend Dermot Mulroney is getting married to Cameron Diaz. She is shell shocked and jealous and wants to marry him herself. So she sets about with a plan to scuttle her best friend’s wedding. The ending is bitter sweet and Julia does not get her love but gets comforted in the arms of her gay friend Rupert Everret.
     
  5. Gone With the Wind

    Based on the best seller by Margaret Mitchell, the story of Scarlett O’ Hara, a southern belle who is wanted by a number of suitors but has her heart set on one person whom  she cannot have (Leslie Howard). One of her suitors is the dashing and debonair Rhett Butler who chase her for a long time but in the end leaves her heartbroken when she realizes the value of his love. His famous last line, “Frankly dear, I don’t give a damn”, is an enduring line that evokes the feelings of unrequited love. This sweeping epic against the back ground of the civil war is notable for the impressive performances of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.

    The story of an expatriate Russian dancer who is forced to land over Soviet territory. The Russians are hesitant to let him go and takes him to the apartment of an American man who has defected and lives with his Russian wife. The dancer is expected to join the Bolshoi ballet but secretly hatches a plan to escape from Russia. The American is growing disillusioned with his life in Russia. Will the American help the dancer? Therein lies the twist in the plot.
     
  7. In the Mood for Love

    Unrequited love for two people whose spouses are cheating on them. The place is Hong Kong and the year 1962. Chow Mo-Wan is a newspaper editor who shifts into a new building with his wife. Similarly, Su Li-zhen, a beautiful secretary and her executive husband also shift in to the same building. Since their spouses are often away, Chow and Li-zhen spend most of their time in each other’s company. They find a lot of common interests from martial arts to noodle shops. Soon, they are stunned to find that their spouses are engaged in an affair. They experience hurt and anger and try to find comfort in their growing friendship but they are adamant not to go the way of their cheating mates.

    Set against the backdrop of the Second World War, the story of Rick who owns a nightclub in Casablanca, Morocco. One night, walks in Victor Lazlo a Czech resistance leader and his wife Ilsa. Ilsa happens to be the long lost love of Rick. Rick and Ilsa had a passionate romance at the beginning of the war in Paris. He was left stranded at the Paris railway station when Ilsa failed to turn up. Now Rick is torn between his noble duty towards Lazlo and his love for Ilsa.

She is a television news producer who is good friends with Brooks but has the hots for William Hurt a handsome but dumb news anchor.     Herr Von Bohm is a new building commissioner of a West German town which is booming and corrupt. He falls for his land lady’s daughter, Marie Louise who unknown to him is a cabaret girl and singer at a bordello, under the name Lola. Lola is also the mistress of Schuckert, a local builder whose profits depend on Von Bohm. The love triangle plays forward to its sedate conclusion.
