Can You Get Gonorrhea in the Mouth?

Gonorrhea is caused by a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhea which targets cells of the mucous membranes of the body such as those found on the penis, vagina and anus, but also the mouth and eyes. So it is very possible to have a gonorrhea infection in the mouth. While the mouth is not a common infection site for gonorrhea it is possible to contract it when performing oral sex on a person that has genital gonorrhea, especially if your mouth comes into contact with genital discharge. The most at risk group for oral gonorrhea are men who perform oral sex on other men. Oral gonorrhea is sometimes asymptomatic and other times symptoms similar to those of a sore throat or light flu develop so as with genital gonorrhea it is easy to misdiagnose.
