Is Gonorrhea a Virus?

Gonorrhea is not caused by a virus.Gonorrhea is instead caused by a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This bacterium infects the reproductive tract, most notably the mucous membranes lining the genitals, but can also affect the mouth, eyes and rectum. It is transmitted through sexual contact and is one of the oldest known STI’s. Because gonorrhea is caused not by a virus but by a bacterium if treated early it is possible to completely eradicate the infection from the body. It is important to note that for the same reason prior exposure to the gonorrhea bacterium does not offer immune protection from future infections.
