Can You Get Gonorrhea From Oral Sex?

Gonorrhea is a curable infectious disease caused by contamination with the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. Gonorrhea is transmitted sexually during vaginal and anal sex as well as when performing or receiving oral sex. The most at risk group for gonorrheal infections are men who perform oral sex on other men. It is a common misconception especially among the younger generations that oral sex is safe sex and this is simply not true. Oral sex is common enough, over 90% of adults 25-44 have performed it, that many sexually transmitted diseases are spread through oral sex alone. Gonorrhea thrives in the mucous membranes of the human body, such as those found in the genitals, anus, eyes and mouth. So If you perform oral sex on a person that is infected with gonorrhea, especially if your mucous membranes come into contact with any secretions caused by the disease, you are highly at risk of contracting gonorrhea yourself. In such a case you would catch pharyngeal gonorrhea.
