Can You Get Gonorrhea From a Toilet Seat?

While there are plenty of dangerous and infections pathogens, such as streptococcus, staphylococcus, E. coli and the hepatitis A virus, to be found in public restrooms it is highly unlikely that you can be infected with gonorrhea from a toilet seat. Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection that is caused when the bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae comes into contact with the mucous membranes of the body. This bacterium is found in the mucous membranes of the infected person and any secretions that might be produced as symptoms of the disease. The bacterium has a relatively short life span outside the body and so unless you are having sexual contact with an infected person on a toilet seat it is extremely unlike that you could catch it by contact with inanimate objects; especially if your immune system is healthy and your practice good hygiene.
