How Is Gonorrhea Spread?

Gonorrhea is caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium and is an infectious disease. Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact with an infected person. Sexual contact in this case refers to any type of sexual intercourse such as oral, vaginal and anal. The gonorrhea bacterium thrives in the moist mucous membranes of the body so if the eyes and mouth come into contact with the bacterium it can take hold and cause infection. Gonorrhea can also spread from mother to child during childbirth. Because the bacterium has a relatively short lifespan outside the human body it is highly unlikely that gonorrhea can be spread through contact with inanimate objects.
